How to calculate a tip
Tip amount = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100). Total = Bill + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ Number of people.
Example: an $86.40 bill with an 18% tip → tip $15.55, total $101.95. Split four ways → about $25.49 each.
Suggested tip percentages
- 10–12% — basic service in some regions, or counter service with a tip jar.
- 15% — common baseline for solid restaurant service in the US.
- 18–20% — widely used for good full-service dining.
- 20–25%+ — excellent service, large parties, or delivery in bad weather.
Customs vary by country. In some places service is included; in others tipping is optional or expected at different rates. When travel etiquette is unclear, check local guidance.
Fair splits
This calculator divides the tipped total evenly. If one person ordered much more, settle the difference after the equal split, or tip on the shared total and pay food separately.
- Decide whether tax is included in the tip base (many people tip on pre-tax; some tip on the full receipt).
- For delivery, consider a floor tip (for example $3–$5) when the percentage is tiny.
- Round up to the nearest dollar when paying cash so servers are not left with awkward change.
